Janet Schalansky

Janet Kay Schalansky, 74, passed away on December 19 2024, at KU Medical Center. Born on October 20, 1950, in Denver, Colorado, Janet lived a life filled with passion, dedication, and service, touching the hearts of many.

Janet graduated from Emporia High School before earning her bachelor's degree from Emporia State University. She obtained her Master’s at the University of Kansas. Janet was a distinguished Alumni with Emporia State Alumni Association, proudly serving as its President.

Janet worked many years for SRS and served as its Secretary, retiring in 2005. After retirement she continued her work in social services as Executive Director of the Kansas Children’s Service League. Her legacy was highlighted by her knowledge and dedication to social issues and programs, to which, she devoted much time and expertise to numerous programs, boards, and other efforts aimed at improving the lives of her fellow Kansans.

Janet was very active at Lowman United Methodist Church in Topeka, where she found fulfillment in the fellowship of her church community. A devoted mother and grandmother, she cherished her time spent with her family, supporting her grandchildren in all their sports and activities.

In addition to her commitment to family and work, Janet enjoyed various hobbies. She loved playing cards, especially bridge, and was a regular attendee at her book club and bible study. Traveling brought her joy, as did her unwavering support for the Kansas City Chiefs, Royals, and local college sports teams.

Janet is survived by her son, Jay (Emily) Schalansky; her daughter, Jill Schalansky; her brother, Rich (Becky) Painter; her grandchildren, Campbell (Conner) McGehee, Charlotte Schalansky, Chase Schalansky, and Gavin Schalansky; and her great-granddaughter, Saylor McGehee.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Schalansky; daughter, Julie Schalansky; mother, Florence Painter; father, Curtis Painter; and sister, Brenda (Phil) Ascher.

A visitation will be held on January 16, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, followed by a memorial service at 11:00am at Lowman United Methodist Church, located at 4101 Southwest 15th Street, Topeka, Kansas, 66604.

Janet will be remembered for her kindness, intelligence, and undying dedication to her family and friends. She will forever be remembered by those she touched throughout her life.
