Jane Akers Forney

Jane Akers Forney, 97. of Topeka, passed away on Saturday, November 11, 2006 at Brewster Place Health Care Center. She was born on September 5, 1909 in Topeka, the daughter of Everett Burnett and Mabel Wood Akers. Her father was the Business Manager for the Topeka Capital Journal. Her mother was a teacher at Parkdale for many years. Jane attended Topeka schools and Washburn University. She graduated from Barnard College in New York City. She was a member of First Congregational Church in Topeka and was the oldest member of the church. She was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and the Junior League of Topeka where she held the office of President 1948. In 1983, she received the Gold Rose Award. Jane worked with many people while she was a Stormont-Vail Auxillary volunteer and was also an active volunteer at the Topeka Public Library for many years. Jane married Robert Hayden Forney, a Topeka pharmacist who grew up in Cottonwood Falls. He preceded her in death in 1989. They had one daughter, Susan Forney Perry of Atlanta, Georgia. She survives along with three grandchildren, James Dick Perry and wife, Becky of Sheffield, AL, Jane Perry McKinley of Topeka and Susan Perry Copeland and husband, Eddie of Hilton Head Island, SC, six great-grandchildren, Jessica, Amber, Hayden, Griffin, William, Jonathan and a niece, Margaret Ann Zipp of College Station, TX. She was preceded in death by her brother, Robert W. Akers. Private graveside services will be held in Topeka Cemetery. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday in the Fink Room at the Brewster Place Health Care Center. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorial contributions be given to Brewster Place Foundation, 1205 S.W. 29th St., Topeka, KS, 66611or to First Congregational Church, 1701 S.W. Collins Ave., Topeka, KS 66604. Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
