James Wesley Young was born in Limon, Colorado, on March 21, 1914, in the Methodist Church parsonage. He died in Richland WA, on January 10. 2007, at the age of 92. As a child he lived in many small towns in southwest Kansas as his father was a pastor. While still in high school, he moved to Colony. KS, to farm family land with his brothers. He also worked as an auto mechanic. While in Colony, he met his sweetheart, Jean McLean, whom he married in 1936. They lived on the McLean farm near Gridley, KS, until 1939 when they became house parents at the Boys Industrial School in Topeka, KS. He then was employed by the Beatrice Foods Co. in Topeka where he worked as a bookkeeper and then accounting manager until he retired in 1976, After his wife died in 1989, he moved to Richland. WA to be close to his daughter_ He is survived by his three children, Tom Young (and wife Joan) of Albuquerque, NM and more recently of Ibadan. Nigeria: Betty Rosenwald (and husband Gary) of Richland, WA; and Dick Young of Arkadelphia, AR. He has twelve grandchildren: Scott Young of Colorado Springs, CO, Kelly Harris of Oklahoma City, OK; Joanmarie Marks of Cheyenne, WY, Gary Rosenwald, Jr. of Bellevue, WA, Julianne Yake of Grand Junction, CO, Vicki Rosenwald of Austin, TX; Marla Young, Tanya Taylor. and Virginia Young, all of Hopewell, VA; Pam Harvey, Heidi Prewitt, and David Young, all of Amity, AR He is also survived by 20 great-grandchildren, his sister-in-law Catherine Young of Wichita, KS, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by his parents and two brothers.
Jim had many talents. He loved music and playing the organ for church services and other events at Richland Gardens. He made beautiful wood carvings and could fix anything. He was an active member of University United Methodist Church in Topeka where he served in many leadership roles and sang in the choir. He was also a Mason and member of Eastern Star. Jim loved the Lord and lived each day sharing His love with others. He was a dear, gentle, loving, and caring man who touched many lives. He will be missed by family and friends.
A service of celebration of Jim's life will be held at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Avenue at 1:00 pm on Saturday, January 20, 2007, with burial to follow at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery & Mausoleum. There will be a time of viewing from 6:00 to 8:00 pm Friday, January 19.
