James William Mullen, 67, of Topeka, passed away Monday, May 18, 2015. He was born July 14, 1947, in Madison, Wisconsin, the son of William and June (Ishmael) Mullen.
James was a graduate of St. Joseph High School in Shawnee, Kansas and attended Rockhurst College and the University of Kansas. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Era as a Green Beret. James attained the rank of Sergeant and served as a medic, being assigned to special missions during the war. He worked as a firefighter/EMT for the Lawrence Fire Department, retiring after 20 years of dedicated service.
James enjoyed astronomy and riding his Harley-Davidson.
He is survived by his mother, June; sisters, Pat McPherson and husband Bruce, Barbara and Margaret Mullen; daughter, Jennifer (Mullen) Schiedel and partner James; three grandsons, Alex, Brandon, and Jesse; and nephew, Scott McPherson.
He was preceded in death by his father; brother, Kevin Mullen; and sister, Cathy Mullen.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 22, 2015, at Mater Dei Holy Name Catholic Church, 1114 SW 10th Avenue, Topeka, Kansas 66604. Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 23, 2015, in Leavenworth National Cemetery. James will lie in state from 3:00-8:00 p.m. on Thursday at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel.
