James W. Elder, 88, of Topeka, passed away on Friday, October 7, 2011 at his home. He was born January 1, 1923 in Gas City, KS, the son of Walter H. and Eva M. Adams Elder. He was a Naval Air Corps veteran of WWII.
James resided in Topeka from 1946-1972, Dallas, TX from 1972-1977 and moved back to Topeka in 1977, where he has resided since. He was employed by the Santa Fe Railroad for 36 years before retiring as Assistant Manager in the Freight Claims Department.
James married Virginia Degenhardt on April 26, 1945. She preceded him in death in February of 2009. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Christiana Sayles. Survivors include one daughter, Linda Jones of Topeka, one son, Dennis Elder of Topeka, two granddaughters, Sheri McKinley and Holly Elder and one great-granddaughter, Kaylyn Elder.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at Highland Park United Methodist Church where the family will receive friends one hour prior to service time. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Midland Care Hospice Services, 200 SW Frazier Circle, Topeka, KS 66606.
