James Stephenson

James Byron Stephenson, 94, passed away Monday, December 5, 2005 in the assisted living unit at Aldersgate Village in Topeka, Kansas.

He was born November 14, 1911, in Chautauqua County, Kansas, the son of Hugh Allen and Mertie Mae Stephenson. Mr. Stephenson was raised on a farm five miles east of Sedan and attended grades one through eight at Caney Valley Grade School, District 86; a one room school in the country.

He graduated from Sedan High School where he earned academic honors in mathematics. He then graduated from Kansas State University in 1933 with a B.S. degree in civil engineering. Following his graduation, he took a position with the Kansas State Highway Commission, now known as the Department of Transportation.

He was blessed with six brothers. Two are living; Allen Eugene of Sedan and Clark B. of Colorado Springs. Deceased are: Harold, Kenneth, Gayle and Loy A.

He married Elizabeth "Betty" Ellen Penfield on April 1, 1933 while in his senior year at Kansas State University. She survives.

In addition to Betty, his wife of 72 years, other survivors include two daughters; Kay Elizabeth Tebow and her husband Bob of Hermitage, Missouri and their four children, Debbie and her husband Tim Gill, Becky and her husband David Edwards, Mike and his wife Michelle Tebow and Robert Tebow; Sandra Sue Adams and her husband Buck of Topeka and their three children, Steve and his wife Janice Adams, Sue and husband Mike Hawks and Bill and his wife Heidi Adams; brothers, Allen Eugene of Sedan and Clark of Colorado Springs; and sister in laws, Claudine and Esther. Other survivors include: great grandchildren; Kelsey, Devin, Hunter, Mikala, Bailey, Shane, Elizabeth, John, Jessica, Rob, Joseph, Emily and Joshua and numerous nieces and nephews.

In accordance with his wishes, cremation is planned. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, December 10, 2005 in Wesley Hall at Aldergate Village. A private family inurnment will be at a later date.
