James Phillip Weir, 89, Topeka, died Thursday, March 24, 2005 at a Topeka retirement home.
He was born Nov. 18, 1915 in Topeka, the son of James and Minnie Doerner Weir. He graduated from Topeka High School in 1935.
Mr. Weir joined Santa Fe Railway in 1937 as a machinist apprentice. He was promoted to machinist in 1941 and the following year was named shop apprentice instructor. In 1951, he was appointed machine foreman and in 1955 was named brass, air, and tool room foreman. When he retired in 1977, he was supervisor of mechanical training.
He was a lifelong member of St. John's Lutheran Church, and had served as Trustee, Elder, Vice-President, and President, as well as on many church boards.
He was a member of the Santa Fe Old Timers Club, and was a past president of the Santa Fe System Association of Supervisors of the Mechanical Department.
He married Susan Jensen on July 3, 1937 in Topeka. She survives. Other survivors include his son, James P. Weir, Jr. and his wife, Lori, two grandsons, Ryan James Weir and Marc Christopher Weir, all of Topeka.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Eric Michael Weir.
Services will be held at 10:30 am Monday at St. John's Lutheran Church. Interment will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery.
Mr. Weir will lie in state after 9:00 am Sunday at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel.
