James Robert McCune, 99, of Topeka, died Monday, November 28, 2016.
He was born October 3, 1917, in Akron, OH, the son of John Raymond and Anna Karlson McCune.
James graduated from Kent State University in 1941. He then joined the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in Akron, Ohio as a member of The Goodyear Aircraft Corporation. After two years he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps and served three years. He returned to Goodyear in 1946 and became a member of the Squad. Two years later he was appointed Instructor at Goodyear Industrial University. He was transferred to the Topeka plant as Manager of Supervisional Training in 1951. He was an Industrial Engineer in the Efficiency Department before becoming Manager of the Labor Department in 1958. He retired from Goodyear with 42 years of service.
James was active in First Congregational Church where he served as Chairman of The Board of Trustees and Moderator. He was past president of the Topeka Babe Ruth baseball league. As a member of the Order of the Arrow, he was active in the Boy Scouts for many years.
He served as a lobbyist for many years where he represented Goodyear and the State Chamber of Commerce in matters of workers compensation and unemployment compensation. He was chairman of the Governor's Advisory Commission on Workers Compensation. He served four years on the Capitol City Task Force for AARP.
In his retirement he did volunteer work for the Red Cross, Stormont-Vail Hospital, Ward-Meade Park, First Congregational Church and various other agencies from time to time.
James was married to Evelyn Franks on January 6, 1943 in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. She preceded him in death in 2010.
Survivors include a son, James McCune, Jr. and wife Donna, Fort Mills, SC and a daughter, Barbara Nutsch and husband Bob, Kalamazoo, MI; 9 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and a son in law, Stan Mitchell of Salina, KS.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sandra Mitchell and a brother, William R. McCune of Leesburg, FL.
Cremation is planned and a memorial service will be held at 4:00 pm, Saturday December 10, 2016 the First Congregational Church.
