James Baxter Lewis, 92, Topeka, passed away Tuesday, May 10, 2016 at Midland Hospice House.
Jim was born April 13, 1924 in Topeka, the son of Ralph E. and Willo M. (Bockoven) Lewis. He attended Gage Elementary, Boswell Junior High and Topeka High Schools. He graduated from Washburn University in 1949.
Jim served in the U. S. Army during World War II.
He was a life-long member of First Christian Church where he had served as Treasurer and a deacon. He was a past member of Southwest Optimist Club, Shawnee Country Club, Kappa Sigma and the Washburn Alumni Association.
He retired from Postal Savings & Loan Association in 1988 after 38 years as a loan officer and real estate appraiser.
Jim met Shirley Long, his wife of 65 years on a blind date while they were students at Washburn. They were married in Topeka on November 9, 1950. She survives. Other survivors include daughter, Rebecca Lewis Schooler, Topeka; son, R. Perry and Jill (Alberg) Lewis, Colorado Springs, CO; grandchildren, J. Ryan and Kelly (Irwin) Lewis, Vacaville, CA; Robert P. Lewis, Denver, CO; Kimberly J. Lewis, Denver, CO; and a sister, Mary Lewis Kresie, Topeka.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 14, 2016 at First Christian Church. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Friday, May 13, 2016 at Mount Hope Cemetery and Funeral Chapel. Private family entombment will be in Mount Hope Mausoleum.
