James Lawter, 67, of Topeka, passed away December 25, 2023, at his home in Topeka.
He was born in Kansas City, Missouri, on October 26, 1956, to William and Clotilda
(Bezingue) Lawter.
He graduated from Topeka West High School and Washburn University in Topeka, where he played catcher and lettered on the baseball teams for both schools.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents William and Clotilda Lawter of Topeka, his maternal grandparents Clifford and Mary Bezingue of Topeka, and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
He is survived by brother William Lawter, Jr. (and Susan) of Ponca City, Oklahoma; sister Mary Lou McKee of Independence, Missouri; niece Shannon Morse (and Jay, and son Grant) of Arlington, Texas; niece Allison Lawter of Alexandria, Virginia; nephew Scott McKee (and Janet, and daughters Anna, Olivia and Jensen) of Lees Summit, Missouri; and a host of cousins in Kansas, Missouri, South Carolina, Texas, Florida and Illinois.
Jim retired from the State of Kansas IT Department in October 2012.
Jim's love for travel took him all over the world, including extended visits to Australia, South America (Brazil, Argentina, Peru and other countries), Southeast Asia (China, Thailand, Hong Kong and others) and Europe (Italy, Austria, Russia, England, Finland and many others).
Jim enjoyed playing baseball, spending time with his family, friends, his cats, cheering for the Kansas City Royals and Chiefs. He also collected model trains, and enjoyed working outside.
Memorial service will be held on Monday, January 22, 2024 at 10:00 at Penwell Gabel Midtown Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Ave Topeka, KS and burial following at Memorial Park Cemetery.
