James Lawrence McKinney, 54, of Topeka, passed away Tuesday, December 9, 2014. He was born December 28, 1959, in Topeka, Kansas, the son of Eugene and Leone (Schumacher) McKinney.
James was a 1979 graduate of Topeka West High School and received his BA in 1985 from Emporia State University with an emphasis in journalism & writing. He was employed by the State of Kansas, working 22 years with SRS, before his retirement.
James was a member of Grace Episcopal Cathedral in Topeka and also the Boy Scouts of America.
Survivors include his parents, Eugene and Leone McKinney; sister, Ruth (Larry) Jaynes; brother, David (Helen) McKinney; nieces, Sarah Jaynes and Christine (Mario) Jaynes-Contreras; great-niece, Aranza; and dear friend, Ranney Vogt. He was preceded in death by a niece, Heather Jaynes.
Funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m. Monday, December 15, 2014, at Grace Episcopal Cathedral, 701 SW 8th Avenue, Topeka, Kansas 66603. Interment will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Sunday at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Avenue, Topeka, Kansas 66604. Memorial contributions may be made to the church or Capper Foundation.
