James J. "JJ" Walters, 81, of Topeka, passed away on Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at a Topeka care facility. JJ was born on July 20, 1928 in Marquette, KS, the son of Frederick J. and M. Evelyn Stinson Walters. He graduated from Marquette High School. He was employed by the Marquette Tribune during high school prior to serving in the Army during the Korean War. He was then employed by the Abilene Reflector-Chronicle. JJ then became the editor of the Marquette Tribune followed by editor of the Lindsborg News-Record for 17 years. After moving to Topeka in 1979, he was employed by General Printing and Paper. After retiring in 1991, JJ and his son founded Capital Graphics, Inc. from which he retired in 2000. He was a member of the American Legion and many civic organizations. JJ was instrumental in organizing the Lindsborg Volunteer Ambulance Corps. He married Kathryn Snyder on August 21, 1953 in Abilene. She preceded him in death in 2005. Survivors include one daughter, Barbara E. Walters and one son, Donald J. (Vicky) Walters, all of Topeka, two grandchildren, BJ (Carolyn) Walters and Amanda Walters and two great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. Graveside committal services will follow at 3:00 p.m. in Marquette Cemetery, Marquette, KS. JJ will lie in state and the family will receive friends from 3:00-4:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
