James E. Gray, 83, of Topeka, passed away on Saturday, February 4, 2017 at Midland Hospice House in Topeka. He was born September 28, 1933 in Wheeling, Missouri, the son of Fay E. and Eula Mae (Grice) Gray.
James graduated from Meadville High School, Meadville, Missouri in 1951. He was an Air Force Veteran during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. His career spanned from December 1952 through March 1973 before retiring. He was employed as a Postal Carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for over 20 years before retiring in 1993.
James was a member of First Baptist Church, American Legion Capitol Post No. 1, Philip Billard Post No. 1650, V.F.W., the Air Force Sergeants Association, a life member of Chapter No. 3 of the D.A.V., the National Association of Letter Carriers and Wakarusa Masonic Lodge No. 402 AF&AM.
James married Joyce Cook on September 11, 1955 in Victoria, Texas. She survives. Other survivors include their children, Gerald Lee (Laura) Gray of Tremont, Illinois, Cynthia Jean (Robert) Evenson of Emporia and Scott Alan (Donna) Gray of Roy, Utah, 5 grandchildren, Kelly, Patrick, Brett, Andrew and Craig, 2 great-grandchildren, Lauren and Oliver and his siblings, Donald Gray of Springfield, Nebraska and Jerry Gray of Springfield, Missouri.
James was preceded in death by his sister, Norma Bias.
Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, February 9, 2017 at First Baptist Church where the family will receive friends one hour prior to service time. Burial will follow in Penwell-Gabel Cemetery.
