James Eric Lathrop, 48, of Topeka, formerly of Canyon, TX, died Sunday, March 26, 2006 at Midland Hospice House.
Eric was born May 16, 1957, in Fort Smith, AK., the son of Dick and Jo Stone Lathrop. He was Counselor to Disabled Students and Men's Cross Country Coach at West Texas A&M University in Canyon, TX for 13 years. He held a BS Degree from the University of Houston in Health Education and a minor in Physical Education. He held a MS Degree in Sports Administration which focused on student-athlete performance and the second field in Biomechanics from the University of Kansas. He had completed theological studies in the Episcopal Diocese of Northwest Texas. He ran the qualifying standard for entry in the 1978 and 1979, Div. 1 NCAA Track and Field Championships with a college best of 14.00 minutes in the 5,000 meters. He served as assistant direct of both Bartlesville, OK and Amarillo, TX YMCA's. He coached several student-athletes to competition in the South-Central NCAA Regional Championships. He as served as meet director and course designer for NCAA Regional Championships in 1994 and 1996.
Survivors include his parents, a brother, Kent and his wife, Bcckie, niece, Catherine, nephews, Alex and Ben of Topeka, nephews, Andrew and Mitchell of Bartlesville, OK., and his dear friend, Renee Marie of Nottingham, NH., aunts, Jan Waugh of Eskridge and Judy Helm of Long Boat Key, FL, and many beloved cousins.
Memorial services will be held at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 28 at St. David's Episcopal Church under the direction of Penwell-Gabel Midtown Chapel.
