James D. Elmborg, 82, of Topeka, passed away Monday, Sept. 11, 2006 at Midland Hospice House.
He was born August 29, 1924 in Lindsborg, KS, the son of Arthur and Hanna Mattson Elmborg.
He served in the Navy during WWII and graduated from Bethany College where he played football. He began his teaching career at St. John's Military Academy in Salina where he was the athletic director, coach and science teacher. He and his family moved to Topeka in 1960 where he coached gymnastics and football and taught chemistry and physics at Topeka West High School, retiring in 1986. He loved sports of all kinds, especially football. In retirement, he enjoyed refinishing antique furniture and spending time with his family and many friends. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
He married Joan Thompson on August 5, 1950 in Marquette, KS. She survives. He was preceded in death by one brother, Arthur Elmborg, Jr.
Other survivors include a son, James K. Elmborg and his wife Ann of Iowa City, IA; three daughters, Ann Semler of Auburn, Susan Elmborg and Ruth Pile and her husband Butch, all of Topeka; four grandsons, Joe McClaskey of Topeka, Paul, Elliot and Drew Semler of Auburn; two sisters, Helen Loy and Betty Ritter of Salina and a brother, Richard Elmborg, of Sachse, TX.
Mr. Elmborg was cremated. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, Sept. 16, 2006 at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel with private family inurnment at a later date.
