James E. "Jim" Simons, 91, of Topeka, passed away on Tuesday, September 09, 2014 at the Colmery O-Neil Veterans Hospital in Topeka.
James was born on July 31, 1923 in Topeka, the son of Charles and Fay (Johnston) Simons. He graduated from Topeka High School in 1942. Jim resided in Quinter, KS for 32 years before returning to Topeka in June of 2011.
Jim was a member of the Church of the Brethren in Quinter, KS and Trinity Presbyterian Church in Topeka, where he served as an Elder of the church.
Jim owned and operated Simons Carpet Company, previously located at 29th and Fairlawn Road in Topeka as well as The Windmill gift shop and antique store in Quinter.
Jim was married to Wava Marie Wiles on March 31, 1944 in Topeka.
Survivors include his two daughters, Cheryl (Art) Lindstrom and Rhonda Botsford, both of Topeka, four grandchildren, Kirsten Khire, Jennifer Engel, Ben Bowden, and Julie Rand, and eight great-grandchildren, one sister, Charlotte Simons Deiter of Topeka as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Wava Marie Simons, by his parents, one brother, Robert Simons, one sister, Marjean Simons Taylor, and two half-brothers.
A celebration of Jim's life will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, September 12 at the Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Ave., Topeka. Burial with military honors will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery, 4700 SW 17th St., Topeka. Following the graveside service, the family will host an informal reception at Lexington Park, 1011 Cottonwood Ct., Topeka.
