James Marion Creviston Sr. died on Feb. 12 at St. Francis Hospital of complications from pneumonia. He was 80.
Jim was born on Jan. 25, 1926, in Manhattan, Kan., to Orville and Hallie Cinnamon Creviston. He graduated from Manhattan High School in 1943 and attended Kansas State University. After serving a four-year apprenticeship in the watch- and clock-making trade, he became a certified clock maker, specializing in repairing and restoring antique timepieces. He retired as assistant to the general watch inspector in the Time Service Department at Santa Fe Railroad after 32 years of service. He traveled the railroad system maintaining timing devices and helped invent an instrument to detect train speed for the railroad. Jim's joys were his family, church, repairing clocks, bowling and feeding the birds.
Jim is survived by his wife, Lavonna Creviston, whom he married on Nov. 3, 1946. They were married for 59 years. Other survivors include children Judith Creviston, Joela Creviston, Theresa Packard, Jamie and Cheryl Creviston, Jill Quarles, and Jewelia and Bob Oswald; brothers Orville, Elmer and Bobby Joe Creviston; sister Grace Morris; step-sister Rita Kilner; and step-brothers Harry and Bill Brockish. He adored his nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Over the years, Jim was a Scout Master and a member of the Breakfast Optimists, the Santa Fe Old Timers and the Santa Fe Bowling League.
Jim will lie in state starting at 2 p.m. Thursday at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. Family will greet friends one hour before services at Faith Lutheran Church, 11:30 a.m. on Friday. A luncheon will follow. Internment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery at a later time.
