James Canole

James Clemont Canole, 80, of Topeka, passed away Saturday morning, January 7, 2006 at his home. Jim was born September 25, 1925 in Marshall, Missouri, the youngest son of John Thomas and Lottie Mae Holiday Canole.

Jim received most of his elementary schooling in Kansas City, Missouri and graduated from Northeast High School in 1942. He then attended Central Missouri Teacher's College for one year prior to entering the U.S. Navy in the fall of 1943. Jim served aboard the Escort Aircraft Carrier, U.S.S. Windham Bay, C.V.E. 92, in the Pacific. The crew was awarded three campaign stars before he was honorably discharged April 16, 1946.

Jim entered the University of Kansas in the fall of 1946 and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Architecture in 1949. He went to work for the State of Kansas Architect's Office in September of 1949 and was appointed State Architect in 1961 by Governor John Anderson and Governor William H. Avery. During his service to the State of Kansas, Jim completed work on the Eisenhower Presidential Library started by his predecessors and worked with the Presidential Library Commission to develop the plans for the Place of Meditation. He continued to work, after he left office, with Senator Harry Darby to complete the erection of the President's statue given to the Center by the Senator.

After l8 years at the University of Kansas, Jim retired as Director of Facilities Planning in 1987.

He was a member of West Side Christian Church where he served on many committees and Diaconate over the years.

Jim married Alpha LaVonne Julian, his kindergarten sweetheart, May 25, 1946. She survives. Other survivors include a daughter; Susan Kim Canole Crooks, and her husband, Bill, Silver Lake; two grandchildren, Bill J. Crooks III and wife, Jessie; Susan Michelle Crooks and her fiance' Trent Zoeller and his son, Zachary, all of Topeka; and a brother; John Holiday Canole and wife, Shirley, Liberty, Missouri.

A Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 11, 2006 at West Side Christian Church. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery. Mr. Canole will lie in stat at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel after 2:00 p.m.on Tuesday and family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
