James Burrell

James M. Burrell, 85, Topeka, passed away Thursday, June 2, 2005 at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka.

He was born February 11, 1920 in Topeka, KS, the son of Norman M. and Mayme Mondeau Burrell. He graduated from Highland Park High School in 1938. While attending Highland Park High School he ran track where he scored the first point ever received by Highland Park in the Kansas Relays. He graduated from Washburn University in 1948.

He served in the Fifth Armored Division of the army four years during World War II and was in the five major battles of the European Theatre. He was awarded the Bronze Star. His outfit was known as "Patton's Ghosts" because they led his army across Germany.

He was the manager of the Topeka Township Water Department from 1945 to 1949. He served on the Seaman School Board and was a Township Trustee for Soldier Township. He was an Internal Revenue Agent from 1949 until he retired in 1974. He was active in farming operations.

James was a member of the Philip Billard Post #1650 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars for 60 years, North Post #400 of the American Legion, the Mid West 5th Armored Division Association, the 5th Armored Division National Association and the Moose Lodge #555.

He married Marie Brandt February 18, 1947. She survives. He is also survived by three sons, Jay M. Burrell and his wife Valdeana, Overland Park; Dean L. Burrell and his wife, Beth, Topeka; Steven L. Burrell, Topeka; and two daughters, Linda Gallaway and her husband Dale, Topeka; and Janet K. Burrell, Excelsior Springs, MO; a sister Bette Gies and her husband Jack, Tecumseh; eleven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held 1:00 p.m. Monday June 6, 2005at the Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. Interment will be in Topeka Cemetery.
Mr. Burrell will lie in state after 2:00 p.m. Sunday at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel where the family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 pm. Sunday.
