Jacob C. Fleenor

Jacob C. "Jake" Fleenor, 84, of Topeka, passed away Saturday, June 27, 2009.

He was born December 13, 1924 in Topeka, the son of Claude and Mabel (Barker) Fleenor. He attended Seaman High School. He served in the U.S. Army during WW II, in the 89th Infantry.

Jake and Mary Jane owned and operated Fleenor Plumbing and Heating in Topeka for 48 years, retiring in 2007.

He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church for over 50 years, serving on many committees and assisted teaching Sunday School. He was Past-President of the Master Plumber's Association and served on the Plumbing School Board. He was a Charter Member and Past-President of Sunrise Optimist Club of North Topeka, receiving the International Heritage Award in 1976. He was a member of NATOMA, and the first Honorary Mayor of North Topeka. He was also a member of Post No. 400 of the American Legion of North Topeka.

Jake married Lois A. Schoenfeld in 1946 in Topeka. She preceded him in death in 1953. He married Mary Jane Johnson on September 22, 1956 in Topeka. She survives of the home. Other survivors include his children, John (Virginia) Fleenor of Topeka, Claudia Smith of Topeka, Tammy (Scott) Mayes of Olathe, KS, Becky Weber of St. Joseph, MO; 10 grandchildren, Laura, Leana, John Jacob, Jr., Aaron, Caitlyn, Conner, Landon, Trinity, Allen, and Joey; 5 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Harry and Clifford Fleenor and a sister, Caroline Scritchfield.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Wednesday, July 1, 2009 at the First United Methodist Church, Topeka. Interment with military honors will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Topeka. Mr. Fleenor will lie in state after 3 p.m., Tuesday at the church, where the family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, 600 SW Topeka Blvd, Topeka, KS 66603 or to Sunrise Optimist Foundation, P.O. Box 8816, Topeka, KS 66608, Topeka, KS, or to Stormont-Vail Hospital Pavilion, 1500 SW 10th, Topeka, KS 66604 or to Midland Hospice, 200 SW Frazier Circle, Topeka, KS 66606. Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel is assisting the family.
