Jack Leslie Barron, 99, of Topeka, passed away Thursday, July 27, 2023.
He was born February 19, 1924, in Fayetteville Arkansas to Hollis and Vivian (Bell) Barron. He attended schools in Combs, St. Paul, and Rogers, Arkansas, and attended the University of Arkansas after WWII. Jack married Gloria Lura Fentem on July 12, 1948, in Rogers, Arkansas and they were married nearly 74 years when Gloria passed away in May 2022.
Jack served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a torpedo bomber pilot aboard the aircraft carrier USS Sangamon. He was an aviator in Air Group 37 and received the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Presidential Unit Citation in addition to other service awards for his role in the Pacific Theater.
Jack was an accountant with Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company for 37 years and retired in 1987.
He and his wife, Gloria, began their membership at First Baptist Church in 1964 and were active members of the Berean Sunday school class.
Jack was a lifelong learner with many hobbies. He was an avid reader enjoying a wide interest in a variety of subjects. He and Gloria enjoyed traveling and camping throughout the United States working on their genealogy "quests". They also travelled internationally. When he was 81, Jack got his PADI Open Water Diver certification. He enjoyed building and flying radio-controlled model airplanes, woodcarving, riding his bicycle, and gardening.
Jack was proceeded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Gloria (Fentem) Barron, his son John Barron, his daughter-in-law Nancy D. (Fenton) Barron, his sisters Donna (Barron) King and Jo Belle (Barron) Troxell, as well as his brother Robert "Clayton" Barron. He is survived by his children, David M. Barron and Susan (Mark) Schafer; nine grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.
Honoring Jack's wishes, cremation is planned. A memorial service is planned for 10:00 am on Saturday, August 19, 2023 at the First Baptist Church in Topeka. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service. He will be laid to rest at Mount Hope Cemetery in Topeka, Kansas.
