J. Stanley Smith

J. Stanley "Smitty" Smith, 84, of Topeka, passed away Saturday, April 18, 2015.

He was born October 12, 1930 in Topeka, KS, the son of Arthur Romain and Claribel Carolyn (Stanley) Smith. He was a 1947 graduate of Topeka High School. He served in the U.S. Navy from August 9, 1948 until being honorably discharged on August 2, 1952.

Smitty was employed by Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company for 44 years, retiring in 1997.

He attended Northland Christian Church, Topeka, American Legion Post No. 400 of North Topeka and Fraternal Order of the Eagles Lodge No. 309.

Smitty married Marcella "Sally" Smith on September 4, 1953 in Huntsville, AR. She preceded him in death on June 6, 2014. Survivors include four children, Rick (Gale) Smith, Topeka, Ray (Pam) Smith, Orlando, FL, Ron (Sally) Smith, Eskridge, KS and Lisa Hoffman, Topeka; nine grandchildren, Ian (Stacy) Smith, Aimee Smith, Jennifer Gogian, Joey (Stacy) Smith, Jessica Oliver, Justin Smith, Edwyne Smith, DeAnna Smith and Chelsea Hoffman; nine great-grandchildren, and one due in October, Adrian and Alana Lopez, Gwendolyn Gogian, Anna Smith, Garrett, Addison and Cody Oliver, Benjamin Vail and Shayson Schneider; and a sister, Carolyn Sue Baker, Georgetown, TX.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Martha Reiman.

A funeral ceremony will be 10 a.m., Thursday, April 23, 2015 at the Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Ave, Topeka. Interment will follow at the Penwell-Gabel Cemetery, Topeka. Stanley will lie in state after 3 p.m., Wednesday at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m.
