A Memorial service for Irene Louise (Fields) Miller, age 84 will be held in Wesley Hall, Aldersgate Village Retirement Community, 7220 SW Asbury at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, September 16th.
She was born November 21, 1929 in Topeka, Kansas the daughter of Melvin and Gladys (Rice) Fields and passed away on September 8, 2014. She attended Holliday Jr. High and Topeka High School where she was a Drum Majorette. She graduated in 1948.
She married James F. Miller on June 5, 1949 in the home built by her parents. She and Jim followed their example building their first home and moved in on December 15, 1950. They were forced to move out on July 13, 1951 when the Kansas River overflowed it's banks and flooded the Kaw River valley. Once cleaned up it remained their Topeka home until 1973.
Employers over the years were: Lerner's Dress Shop (sales), Fleming Company (key punch operator), Josten's (yearbook covers), Balderson Manufacturing (receptionist), and the Department of Continuing Education (field service, KU School of Nursing).
She and Jim were co-founders of a scholarship fund at the Terry L. Johnson Center For Basic Cancer Research, Kansas State University. The scholarship honored Don Marrs, a cancer stricken city letter carrier from Cincinnati, OH.
Irene was a skilled latch hook and needlepoint crafter and created numerous items to help with fund raising efforts to support NAPUS (National Association of Postmasters in the U.S.) sponsored scholarships. As husband Jim conducted his campaign for the national presidency of NAPUS from 1989-1991 she traveled the nation with him and was an invaluable asset. Once elected they moved to Alexandria, VA for a two-year term and she was a very popular First Lady.
They moved back to Kansas when his term in office ended on January 1, 1994.
She is survived by three sons: Ron and his wife Debbie of Lawrence, KS; Kerry, Topeka; Scott and his wife Carla of Olathe, KS and their children, Eric and Micayla. Her parents and brother Keith Fields preceded her in death.
Irene requested to cremated and the family is honoring her wishes.
