Irene Lena Hughes, 91, of Topeka passed away Friday June 4, 2004. She was born to Stephen and Ida Schurle Beninga on the family homestead near Riley, KS on April 13, 1913. Irene attended the country Harmony school, then attended and graduated from Riley Rural High School. She also attended and graduated from business school in Topeka.
Irene was a longtime employee of Southwestern Bell Telephone Company, a member of First United Methodist Church and after retiring from SWB she was a volunteer at Stormont-Vail Hospital. She enjoyed traveling to other countries on vacations and her stepdaughter Helene Buckley had been a true enjoyment in Irene's life.
In 1945 she married Charles V. Hughes, he passed away in 1975. The sole survivor is her sister Gladys Anderson of Riley, KS.
Mrs. Hughes will lie in state on Monday, June 7, 2004 from noon until 9:00 p.m. Funeral services will be in Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel at 11:00 am on Tuesday , June 8, 2004. Private interment will follow.
