Irene Louise Cox, 85, of Topeka, passed away on Thursday, August 2, 2012 at McCrite Plaza. She was born on October 26, 1926 in Topeka, Kansas to William G. and Rose Mildred (Quinn) Hopkins.
She graduated from Topeka High School in 1944. After high school she worked in the office for Morrell Packing Company, where she met her husband Harry. She then went to work for Capitol Federal in 1951 and was Henry Bubb's personal assistant and corporate secretary until her retirement in 1997. In 1990, she was named First Vice President of Human Resources. In that position, she functioned as the trustee of the association's employee pension plan and employee profit sharing plan.
She was an active member of First Christian Church. Irene's passions were bowling and spending time with her family. She also had a love of music, especially Big Band music. While growing up, Irene and her siblings always enjoyed the music and dancing at Vinewood.
She is survived by her son, Randy (Sarah) Cox of Topeka; two brothers, Jack Hopkins and James (Irene) Hopkins all of Topeka; one sister, Peggy Alcorn of Humble, TX; four grandchildren, Lindsey Cox, Daniel Cox, Zachary Bernal and Nicholas Bernal all of Topeka and one great-great-grandchild, Cayson Cox of Topeka.
She was preceded in death by her husband Harry J. Cox in 2005 and her brother William G. Hopkins.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 7 at the Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. Burial will follow in the Penwell-Gabel Cemetery.
Irene will lie in state after 4 pm on Monday at the funeral home where the family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
