Humberto Lerma

Humberto "Bert" Lerma, 76, died October 10, at Brewster Place Nursing Home in Topeka, Kansas. His illnesses were complicated by Parkinson's Disease. He was born on May 26, 1936, in Linn, Texas, to Catarina (Medina) and Jose Lerma. Due to their early deaths, Bert was raised by his grandmother, Gertrudes Medina, and his Uncle Juan and Aunt Aurora Medina.

Bert graduated from Edinburg, Texas, High School, and joined the U.S. Army in 1956; graduating from the U.S. Army School of Engineering at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. His military service was at the First Guided Missile (Nike Hercules) Battalion in Gaithersburg, Maryland, with an honorable discharge in 1959. Bert and Barbara (Hartley) Lerma were married in 1961. He was preceded in death by his parents and surrogate parents, and by his brother Alberto.

Surviving family members are his wife, of the home, sons Reuben Lerma (and Whitney Halcomb), and Joseph Lerma (and Jamie Gibson), and grandchildren Mario, Miranda, Maria, Mason, McKinley, Lily and Kionna. His brother, Jose, Jr., and his daughters also survive, along with his surrogate parents' children, Alphonso, Juan and Mary Lou. Alberto's children survive as well. Bert's was a field engineer for General Testing Labs and Technical Materiel Corp. in Alexandria, Virginia; his assignments involved supervising diesel engine installations throughout the U.S., and in Puerto Rico, St. Croix, Panama, Brazil, Turkey, Greece, and France. He and Barbara lived in Iran in 1967 for his assignment as a subcontractor (Philco-Ford) on communication sites for His Majesty's (The Shah) Imperial Iranian Air Force. In 1973, he worked for Bechtel Power Corp. at three nuclear power plants, including start-up at Wolf Creek Nuclear Operating Co. in Burlington, Kansas. In 1985 he began work with Westar Energy and retired in 2007. He was a deacon at Berryton Baptist Church.

Memorial services will be at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel, Saturday, October 13, 2012, at 3 o'clock pm. Inurnment will take place at Johnson County Memorial Gardens in Overland Park at a later date.
