Howard Benjamin Burges

March 29, 1915 — March 4, 2003

Howard Benjamin Burges, 87, died March 4, 2003 at a Topeka care facility. He was born March 29, 1915 in Tucson, Arizona to Howard Benjamin Burges, Sr. and Lenna Hobbes Burges. He married Mary Louise Carlson on Christmas Day, 1941 in Washington, D. C. and served with the United States Navy in the South Pacific during WWII, the Korean War and as a Lt. Commander in the Navy Reserves.

Howard graduated from the University of Arizona with a degree in Electrical Engineering and worked most of his life in Contracts Administration with various defense-oriented corporations, retiring in 1977 after having lived in Arizona, Washington state, California, Arkansas, New York and Pennsylvania.

After retirement, he and his wife traveled within the United States and Europe, living for a year in a small village in southern England and also in New Zealand. Upon their return to the states, they settled in Little Rock, Arkansas where Howard became an active volunteer with the Museum of Science and History, Heifer Project International, the Genealogy Department of the Library, and the History Commission. He continued to pursue interest when they moved to Topeka where he volunteered at the Shawnee County Library and the Kansas Museum.

He is preceded in death by two brothers, Tom and Sterrett Burges, and one sister, Margaret Fraps.

Survivors include his wife, Marylou, Presbyterian Manor, Topeka; one sister, Virgina Edwards, Lake Forrest, CA; one daughter, Cheryl Burges-Rowh, Topeka, KS; three grandchildren: Carson Burges-Rowh and wife Amy Engel Rowh, Kearney, NE; Sonrisa Burges-Rowh, Kansas City, MO; and Sarah Burges-Rowh, Topeka, KS; one
great-grandchild, Coleman Benjamin Rowh, Kearney, NE.

A memorial service is pending at Topeka Presbyterian Manor Jellison Chapel with memorial contributions to the Health Care Chapel Fund, Presbyterian Manor or Midland Hospice in Topeka. Private inurnment will take place in Grand Island Cemetery at Grand Island, Nebraska.
