Hortense Horton Beck, 89, of Topeka, passed away Thursday, October 1, 2009 at Brewster Health Center.
She was born February 17, 1920 in Atwood, KS, the daughter of William and Margaret Horton. She was a graduate of UCLA.
Hortense married Dr. Joseph D. Beck on Christmas Day, 1943. They shared over 64 years together before his passing on May 6, 2008.
Mrs. Beck spent 30 years replicating historical album appliqué quilts, as well as, creating her own quilts. Recently her large quilt collection was given to the International Quilt Study Center at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, NE.
Survivors include her daughter, Sarah Kirby (Fred); her sister, Ann Jeter; two grandsons, Joseph B. Kirby and Frederick C. Kirby II (Lauren); one great grandson, Frederick C. Kirby III.
Mrs. Beck was cremated. The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m., Sunday, October 11, 2009 at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Ave, Topeka. Private family inurnment will be at the Fairview Cemetery, Atwood, KS.
