Horace Wren Eubank

Horace Wren Eubank, 86, of Topeka passed away Saturday, July 2, 2005at Stormont-Vail Hospital.

Horace was born August 12, 1918 in Coats, Kansas to Charlie and Jessie Guy Eubank Eubank, whom were early settlers arriving in 1888 and 1906 respectively.

He received a BS and MS at Emporia State University and served in the United States Army for four years as an Instructor and Criminal Investigator.

Horace was married to a woman for all seasons, Ruth Hawes Eubank for 46 years. She passed in August 1993.

Horace worked as a Farmer for 10 years in the Pratt area being a man of the soil and earth at heart. He was also an Educator in the fields of Speech and English arts at Topeka West High School and a substitute instructor for eight years at Hayden High School; He started the first high school course in oral interpretation in the state of Kansas. He presented numerous one-man lectures/recitals based on contemporary Latin-American literature; he has also presented shows on the works of the Argentinean writer Jorge Luis Borges. He was a World traveler, having visited 47 of the United State, as well as England, France, Italy and Argentina (part of his study of Borges' works).

He was a Devotee to the thesis of "one world" with the motto: "We are all one under the sun"; and was an undying student and aficionado of Borges, who also believed strongly in the "one world" concept.

In memory of his wife Ruth and in his dedication to learning, he awarded scholarships to the top Topeka High School scholars in the fields of art, music, and forensics. He also awarded theatre scholarships to his alma mater Emporia State University.

His memberships included the International Center, Washburn University, Topeka, Kansas; Optimist International; Topeka Art Guild; NEA; Farm Bureau; Kansas Land Institute; Emporia State Alumni Association (life member); and National Wildlife Federation; Supporter of MS and Alzheimer's research groups, as well as all Conservation groups.

His interests included tennis, dancing, movies, music, literature, reading, art collecting (art collection includes 29 Sudlows, beginning in 1965, which will become part of the Topeka Public Library Art Collection; and one Norm Eppink), walking, meditation, gardening and lapidary, and singing.

His life goal was to live to be 105, serving mankind, stay a lifelong learner, and to meet the goals set for and with him by 10 timeless women in his life.

Horace was eternally indebted to Dr. Frank Gilson, the first director of the Medicine Lodge Peace Pageant, and Dr. Karl Bruder, both of Emporia State; and Dr. Ted Cloak, Berkshire Playhouse, Stockbridge, Massachusetts, as well as his magnanimous mother, Jessie Guy Eubank Eubank and his driving father Charlie Thompkins Eubank.

He is survived by two brothers, Lowell D. Eubank of San Clemente, California, and William L. Eubank of Coats, Kansas, as well as nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Ruth, his Mother and Father, and one brother Haskell D. Eubank.

A Memorial Service will be Friday, July 8 at 2:00p.m. at the First United Methodist Church. Inurnment will be in Belpre, Kansas.
