Homer I. McElroy, 99, of Topeka, passed away Thursday, March 9th, 2017 at Brewster Place Topeka, KS.

He was born March 18, 1917, in Berryton, KS, the son of William Albert and Nina Maude (Nicely) McElroy. He was a graduate of Berryton High School class of 1934.

Homer married Rosemarie Niccum on October 1, 1938 in Topeka and she preceded him in death in 2011 after 72 wonderful years of marriage.

Homer was the service manager for Sears before becoming a Topeka Firefighter. Then in the late 40's he was the service manager and refrigeration man for Air Engineering. Homer & Rosemarie founded McElroy Refrigeration & Heating on May 1st, 1951. In 1959 Homer was instrumental in helping fellow employee Clarence Wilch design what became the Wilch slush machine.

Homer was a member of First Congregational Church, Rotary Club, Masonic Lodge, Topeka Arab Shrine, several refrigeration & heating associations and a 65-year member of the Lakeview Fishing & Shooting Association where Homer & Rosemarie loved to spend their weekends when not traveling in the motor coach or spending time at the home they built in Mexico.

Homer is survived by his children Donna Robinson, Jerry (Janet) McElroy and Carol (Gary) Hunsicker, all of Topeka; seven grandchildren, Susan Botkin, Sara (Scott) Cook, Paula (Dan) Beal, Janell (Denny) Rogers, Scott (Sherry) Hunsicker, Greg (Jennifer) Hunsicker and Andrea (Greg) Bax; 14 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild and another on the way; and his sister, Catherine Bishop of Minden, NV. His parents and two brothers preceded him in death.

The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m., until the funeral service at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, March 14, 2017 at Mount Hope Cemetery and Funeral Chapel, 4700 SW 17th Street, Topeka. Interment will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery, Topeka.
