Hilda Mendenhall, 92, Boise, Idaho, formerly of Topeka, passed away on Wednesday, April 11, 2006.
Hilda was born May 5, 1914 in Shattuck, Oklahoma, the fourth child of Ludwig L. and Louisa (Renner) Appel.
Hilda was employed as a nurse with Newman Memorial Hospital in Shattuck, Oklahoma, Larned State Hospital in Larned, Kansas and as a Physical Therapist with the Kansas Neurological Institute, Topeka, Kansas. After retirement, Hilda stayed active with traveling and as a member of Women of the Moose, Moose Lodge No. 555. She and Ray loved to entertain family and friends, and they enjoyed dancing at the Moose Lodge. Hilda loved to cook, try new recipes and shared her favorite recipes with family and friends. Hilda was a member of University Methodist Church in Topeka, Kansas.
Hilda married Ray Mendenhall on June 27, 1956 in Annett, Oklahoma. He died in 1997. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, John Appel; sisters, Mollie Brace, Emma Schultz and Clara Odenthal. Survivors include her sister, Alvena Adkins, Boise, Idaho, and brother-in-law, H.G. Odenthal, Melbourne, Florida; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 16, 2007 at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery. Hilda will lie in state at the funeral home after 3:00 p.m. on Sunday and visitation will be from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m.
