Herbert Claine Nunemaker, 94, Topeka, passed away on Monday, July 19, 2010 at St. Francis Health Center. Herbert was born February 27, 1916 in Lawrence, the son of Herbert C. and Mae (Green) Nunemaker, Sr.
He graduated from Liberty Memorial High School and attended Kansas University. He served in the U.S. Army as First Sergeant of Company "C" of the 328th Engineers in the European Theatre during World War II.
He was a Civil Engineer working for the KDOT, was the Engineer that built the Kansas Turnpike and later worked for Cook Flatt & Strobel Consulting Engineers. He farmed and taught in the Rural School Adeline District #65 and Blue Mount District #29 in Douglas County.
He was a member of First Lutheran Church of Topeka, Capital Post #1 of the American Legion, Retired Teachers #501, was a charter member of the FFA in Lawrence, and a member of the retired Kansas Highway Employees. He was a member of the Jayhawk Area Boy Scout Council, District Commissioner and was awarded the Silver Beaver and Lutheran Lamb Award for Scouting.
Herbert married Helen Louise Overbaugh on September 22, 1946 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lawrence, she survives. Other survivors include sons, Charles (Janet) Nunemaker, Plano, TX, Dr. Merle (Vicki) Nunemaker, Lee's Summit, MO; five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene; sisters, Marguerite Pettengill, Dorothy Norris; and granddaughter, Lesley.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 23, 2010 at First Lutheran Church. Burial will follow at 2:30 p.m. at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Lawrence. Visitation will be on Thursday, July 22 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Lutheran Church, 1234 SW Fairlawn Road, Topeka, Kansas 66604.
