Herbert E. "Barney" Gilmer, 91, of Topeka, passed away on Thursday, November 29, 2012, at a Topeka hospital.
He was born August 17, 1921, in Etowah County, AL, the son of Charles Thomas and Cora Lee Erwin Gilmer. Barney was an Army Air Corps veteran of WWII. He was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for 37 years. Barney was a member of Central Presbyterian Church. He was a volunteer at Heartland Presbyterian Camp in Parkville, MO. Barney married Betty Sheppard on May 6, 1945, in Topeka. She preceded him in death on April 20, 1991. He was also preceded in death by four brothers, two sisters, and one grandson.
Survivors include two daughters, Patricia (Stanley) Saints of Kansas City, MO, and Cynthia (Bob) Garhan of Topeka; four grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; a niece, Julie Ann Glenn of Birmingham, AL, and special friend, Marilyn Nast of Hallam, NE.
Services will be held at 2:00 pm Monday, December 3, 2012, at Central Presbyterian Church, Topeka. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery, Topeka. Barney will lie in state after 2:00 pm Sunday, December 2, 2012, at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel, Topeka, where the family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 pm.
