Dr. Herbert E. Spohn, 90, of Topeka, Kansas, passed away Saturday, December 7. He was born on June 10, 1923 in Berlin, Germany, and became a naturalized American Citizen at Fort Collins, Colorado, while serving his country in World War II.
Herb spent many years as a research scientist publishing numerous articles and book chapters on schizophrenia and was the Director of Research at the Menninger Foundation from 1980-2000. He worked on the small grants committee at the National Institute of Mental Health. In retirement, he had a successful career as a writer and poet.
He is survived by his partner, Judy Nagy; daughters, Jessica and Madeleine; nieces, Christina and Melissa; and his six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother, Martin Spohn.
Funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 11, 2013 at Mount Hope Chapel, 4700 SW 17th St, Topeka, Kansas. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 p.m. today at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Avenue, Topeka, Kansas. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Topeka Symphony Orchestra, P.O. Box 2206, Topeka, Kansas 66601.
