Henry Arthur "Hank" Lockard II, 74, Tecumseh, died Monday, Nov. 20, 2006, at a Kansas City, Mo., hospital. He had suffered a stroke at his home earlier in the week. Hank was an architect. He was born Nov. 3, 1932, in Kansas City, Mo., to Henry Arthur and Margaret Isabelle Broaddus Lockard. He grew up in Kansas City, Mo. He graduated from Lawrence High School in 1951. Hank met Stella Fern Carney at Lawrence High School and the dapper fellow married her on Sept. 23, 1951, in Lawrence. That marriage began with Hank attending Washburn University for two years on a football scholarship, where he suited up to hold the ball for place kicks. Stella supported them by performing in circuses and road shows. Hank later attended The University of Kansas for six years, working nights and weekends while Stella raised kids. Hank's career spanned more than 42 years and he worked with many area architects and contractors. He took continuing education classes in architecture and construction on an annual basis, completing one this fall in masonry. He was a member of Topeka Bible Church, Gideon's International and the Jivaro Lake Club Inc. He was an emeritus member of the American Institute of Architects. He ministered to inmates and the homeless at the Rescue Mission, and passed out Bibles on college campuses for the Gideons. He enjoyed a variety of activities and entertainment, and when the Speed Channel came to television he could visit Heaven without leaving his living room. Survivors include his wife, Stella, at home; a daughter, Margie Young, San Mateo, Calif.; three sons, Hal and his wife, Karlene, and Matt and his wife, Denise, in Topeka, and Chuck and his wife, Christy, in Tecumseh; two sisters, Allison Lockard, Sweetwater, Okla., and Susan Collister, Chesterfield, Mo.; nine grandchildren; and a great-grandson. Hank was preceded in death by a sister, Nan Popovits; and a brother, Andy. The funeral service will be at.10:30 a.m. Saturday at Topeka Bible Church. Inurnment will be in West Lawn Memorial Garden. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to Gideon's International or the charity of the donor's choice.
