Helen L. Miller, Topeka, passed away on Thursday, September 23, 2021.
She was born September 2, 1927, in Stroud, Oklahoma, the daughter of Dewey and Rebecca (Reed) Howard.
She graduated from Bonner Springs High School and attended the University of Kansas.
She married her high school sweetheart, Daric M. Miller within days after his return from serving in the Merchant Marines in WWII. They were married on June 26, 1945 in Oklahoma County, Oklahoma.
Helen was telephone operator in Lawrence while Daric was attending KU. After they were married, she took time as a homemaker to raise their four children. After her children began school, she assisted as a para-professional at McCarter Grade School and later worked at Pennsylvania House as an interior decorator.
She was a member of Lowman United Methodist Church. She was very active with the Topeka Jayhawk Club, creating "Hawk Watches" a group gathering to watch the basketball games at local businesses. She was active with Topeka MG Club and Mulvane Art at Washburn University.
Helen enjoyed listening to the Topeka Jazz Club. She loved working in her yard with her roses and flowers. She was a great cook, enjoyed dancing, and was an avid walker.
Helen and Daric loved to travel, one of her favorite places they visited was the Greenbrier, West Virginia. She also loved visiting her daughter Jane in the Lake of the Ozarks.
She was preceded her in death by her husband, Daric on April 1, 1980. She was also preceded in death by three sister, Virginia Pruitt, Patricia Wendt, and Joyce Gillum, and one brother, Dewey Howard, Jr.
Survivors include four children: Jane (Dennis) Wright, Susan Allen, Donald (Sharon) Miller, and Karl Miller; six grandchildren, Sara, Elizabeth, Emily, Christina, Daric, and Meri-Margaret; one great-grandson, Caden (Sara's son); one sister, Norma (Robert) Laing; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be1:30 p.m. Thursday, September 30, 2021 at Lowman United Methodist Church, 4101 SW 15th St., Topeka. Private family graveside inurnment for Daric and Helen will be Friday, October 1, 2021 at Mount Hope Cemetery.
