Helen Marshall

Helen Marshall died Saturday, May 29, 2004. She was the daughter of George and Jennie Devlin Christman. Her entire life was spent in Topeka where she attended the Topeka Public Schools. She was a graduate of the University of Kansas, where she was affiliated with Sigma Kappa social sorority and a lifetime member of the Alumni Association and the Williams Education fund. Helen was a long-time member of First Presbyterian Church where she served as a deacon, a trustee, and on many other committees. She also was a member of Chapter CS of P.E.O., the 21 Book Club, Stormont-Vail Medical Auxiliary, the Topeka Bar Auxiliary, the Topeka Women's Club and was active in many Bridge Clubs. She was married to Herbert A. Marshall in Liberty, Missouri on May 3, 1941. He preceded her in death on August 30, 2000. She also was preceded in death by their son, Tom in July, 1988. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Deanna Marshall of Bennington, Nebraska, a daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Bill Nichols of Topeka and a daughter-in-law, Francie Marshall of Lenexa, Ks. Her eight grandchildren and their spouses are Jed and Angie Marshall, Portland, Maine; Leonard and Melanie Marshall, Monterrey, California; Jeff and Meghan Nichols, Lenexa, Ks., Jenny Nichols, Los Angeles, California; Justin and Kelli Nichols, Olathe, Kansas; Tom and Ann Marshall, Gladstone, Missouri; Tammy and Chad Williams, Topeka and Stacy Marshall, Lenexa, Ks. She was also the proud great-grandmother of eight. Her active business career was spent working for the Kansas Legislature, where she served as secretary to the leadership of the Kansas Senate for 28 years. She also served as secretary to Lt. Governor John Crutcher and retired as Executive Secretary to Governor Robert F. Bennett in 1978. Cremation took place. Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday at the First Presbyterian Church. Private inurnment will take place in Penwell-Gabel Memorial Park Cemetery.
