Helen M. Zimmer, 87, of Topeka, passed away Monday, August 25, 2014, at Homestead Assisted Living. She was born July 20, 1927, in Burlington, Iowa, the daughter of Adam and Christina (Knapp) Mauer.
Raised on a farm near Gridley, Kansas, she graduated high school at the young age of 17. She later moved to Topeka to work for the war effort at the supply depot.
Helen was very active in her church, Girl Scouts & Cub Scouts, Sunday school, the American Red Cross, and enjoyed volunteering in the public schools. She was very proud of completing the Flo Menninger Bible Study Course. Helen's home was always open and for many generations a favorite gathering place for neighborhood children.
Helen married Joseph J. Zimmer on September 20, 1945, in Topeka. He preceded her in death on April 19, 2014. Other survivors include daughter, Sharon M. (husband, Bill) Read of Topeka; son, Lloyd B. Zimmer (fiancée, Jackie Borgeson) of Topeka; grandson, Christopher (Dawn) Frost; granddaughter, Erin (Micah) Forstein; three great-grandchildren, Dylan, Kaila and Estella; sisters, Thresa Platt, Ada Young, and Alberta Phillips; and sister-in-law, Lu Fosbinder.
Memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday, August 29, 2014, at First Congregational Church. Private inurnment will take place in Mount Hope Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Midland Care, 200 SW Frazier Circle, Topeka, Kansas 66606 or First Congregational Church, 1701 SW Collins, Topeka, Kansas 66604. Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel is assisting the family.
