Helen Katherine Smelser, 92, of Topeka, passed away Sunday, April 15, 2007.
She was born on September 27, 1914 in Baldwin, KS, the daughter of William H. and Caroline (Hock) Johanning. She graduated from Baldwin High School in 1932 and graduated from St. Luke's School of Nursing in KCMO in 1941. Helen served in the Army Nurse Corps from 1942 until 1944.
She married Dr. Joseph E. Smelser on August 19, 1955. He preceded her in death in 1979.
After serving many years as a surgical nurse, she retired from the Colmery-O'Neil Veteran's Administration Hospital in 1970.
Helen was a member of St. Luke's Nursing Alumni Association, First Christian Church, and Beulah Chapter No. 34 O.E.S.
She is survived by her son, W. Robert (Jeanne) Montgomery, Lakewood, CO; grandchildren, Jay (Jennifer) Peery, Mission, KS; Amanda (Timothy) Hatch, Delta, CO; great-grandchildren, Blake and Katherine Peery; niece, Sondra Nickel; nephew, Orville Johanning and sister-in-law, Katherine Johanning. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Carl Johanning.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, April 20, 2007 at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. Interment will be at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery. Mrs. Smelser will lie in state on Thursday from 11:00 a.m. until 8:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to St. Luke's Nursing Alumni Association Scholarship Fund, St. Luke's Hospital, 4225 Baltimore Ave., KCMO 64111.
