Helen Franklin

Helen H. Franklin, 93, of Topeka, passed away Sept. 7 at Aldersgate Village. She was born June 3, 1915 in Topeka, the daughter of John and Maud (Marshall) Hersh.

On Jan. 1, 1955, she married Elmer Leroy Franklin in Topeka. He preceded her in death July 8, 1980. Helen graduated from Topeka High School in 1934; from there she attended Baker University and was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority, Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of the American Colonists, 1812 (Present Chapter President and State Treasurer), Colonial Daughters of XVII Century (State President), Kansas State Court of Assistants, National Society Women of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company (Past President), Colonial Dames of XVII Century (State Historian), Society of Mayflower Descendants, Sons & Daughters of the Pilgrims (State Historian), Flagen and Trenchers, Colonial Clergy, National Society Magna Charta Dames, Colonial Governors 554B, Daughters of Colonal Wars #7170, Paper approved for Descendants of Early Quackers, New England Women (Past President), Huguenot Society of Kansas, The Garretson Family Society, The Morril Morrel Family Association, Quaker Yeomen (Beals & Claytons), Topeka Genealogical Society, Kansas Council of Genealogical Societies, American Family Record Association Nominated for Council, Kansas State Historical Society, Indiana State Historical Society, Kansas Genealogical Society (Dodge City, KS), Riley County Genealogical Society, South Central Pennsylvania Genealogical Society, Topeka Chamber of Commerce. She attended Chicago College of naprapathy/massage and practiced in Chicago from 1939 to 1949 before moving back to Topeka in 1949 to start her own practice, which she did until retirement in 1969. She was a member of the International Myomassethics Federation. In 1952 she became owner and operator of Tops Motel in Topeka. She was a member of Kansas Innkeepers Association. She was a massage staff member for the Y.W.C.A from 1982 until 1995.

She enjoyed researching genealogy and wrote several books for both sides of her family. She was a member of numerous genealogy clubs: Daughters of the American Revolution where she was past Chapter Regent and Registrar, Daughters of American Colonists, where she was past Chapter Regent and Registrar, 1812, where she was Chapter President and State Treasurer, Colonial Daughters of XVII Century, where she was state president, Kansas State Court Assistants, National Society Women Descendants of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company, where she was past state president in Trenton, MO, Colonial Dames of XVII Century, where she was state historian, Society of Mayflower Descendants, Sons and Daughters of the Pilgrims, where she was State Historian, Colonial Governors, Daughters of Colonial Wars #7170, Flagen and Trenchers, Colonial Clergy, National Society Magna Carta Dames, Descendants of Early Quakers, New England Women, where she was past state president, Huguenot Society of Kansas, Genealogical and Family Societies, The Garretson Family Society, The Morrill Morrell Family Association, Quaker Yeoman (Beals & Claytons), Topeka Genealogical Society, Kansas Council of Genealogical Societies, American Family Record Association Nominated for Council, Kansas State Historical Society, Indiana State Historical Society, Kansas Genealogical Society (Dodge City, KS), Riley County Genealogical Society, and South Central Pennsylvania Genealogical Society. Helen was a member of the Topeka Chamber of Commerce and First Methodist Church. She also enjoyed doing many crafts.

Survivors include a brother, George Hersh and wife Marge of Topeka; a sister, Florence Schoener of Wisconsin; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, her sister, Lucille Johnson, her step-son Richard Franklin and step-daughter, Dorothy Keefer.

Helen has donated her body to KU Medical Center for medical research. There will be no services at this time. Memorial contributions may be made to First Methodist Church or Aldersgate Village in care of Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel.
