Helen L. Echols, 90, passed away Sept. 14, 2008 in Topeka, KS. She was born Apr. 1, 1918 in Winchester, KS, the daughter of Joseph and Della James.
She was married to H. Jack Echols who preceded her in death in 1997. Five brothers, Edgar, Elmer, Frank, Johnnie and Edward James; and one sister Mattie James preceded her in death.
Mrs. Echols was a LPN and private caregiver for many years in Topeka. She was a member of Family of God Church.
Survivors include five sons and their spouses, Marion and Shirley Payne, Aurora, NE; William Payne and Karla Wright, Olathe, KS; Elmer Joe and Chloe Payne, Lawrence, KS; Earl and Cynthia Payne, Monterrey, CA; and Clarence and Alice Payne, Tecumseh, KS; a brother, Ray "Pete" James and wife Bonnie, Topeka; a sister, Ruth Meyer, Topeka; 11 grandchildren, Jeff Payne, Vicki Krueger, Michele Hawkins, Lisa Donovan, David Payne, Lori Poland, Michael Payne, Greg Payne, Christopher Payne, Matthew Payne and Debbie Widman; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m. on Thurs., Sept. 18 at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. Burial will follow at Topeka Cemetery. Visitation will be on Wed., Sept. 17 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and Thurs. from noon to service time all at the funeral home.
