Helen Deel, 94, of Baldwin City, formerly of Topeka, died Sunday, July 25, 2004 at a Baldwin City care facility. She was born on January 14, 1910 in Baldwin City, the daughter of Samuel A. and Mary G. Gill Deel. Ms. Deel graduated from Baldwin High School in 1927. She graduated from Baker University in Baldwin City, obtaining a AB Degree in 1932 and from Washington State University in Pullman, Washington after obtaining an AM Degree in 1934. She was employed by Washburn University in Topeka as an associate professor in the English department for 31 years before retiring in 1977. She was a member of the Chapter DN of P.E.O. in Topeka, Evangeline Chapter 162 of the O.E.S. in Baldwin City, Topeka Retired Teachers, Sigma Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, and First United Methodist Church in Topeka. Survivors include one sister, Dorothy Barnthouse of Baldwin City, one brother, William G. Deel of Baldwin City and many nieces and nephews. Ms. Deel bequeathed her body to the University of Kansas Medical Center. No services are planned. Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
