Helen Alice Coop

Helen Alice Reed Coop, 89, Topeka, passed away on Wednesday, November 29, 2006 at Midland Hospice House.

Alice was born January 13, 1917 in Greenville Junction, Maine to Alfred and Annie (Thompson) Reed. She was the second youngest child with 2 brothers and 1 sister.

She met Forrest Arthur Coop at Emporia State Teachers College in 1937. They were married at Cottonwood Falls, Kansas and had three children. After they were married, she taught in a one room schoolhouse in Olivette, Kansas. They later moved to Topeka where she became a secretary at Winter Veterans Hospital.

The family moved to the Washington, D.C. area where she worked for the National Institutes of Health (N.I.H.) in Bethesda, Maryland. She and Forrest later returned to Topeka where she worked for the National Guard Payroll Division until she retired. She then worked as Church Secretary for First United Methodist Church where she was also a member.

Her hobbies included gardening, (roses and vegetables), golf, walking her Rhodesian Ridgebacks, playing Bridge and she crocheted. She enjoyed singing in the church choir which she was a member for 28 years. Alice had a strong faith in God and studied her Bible. She was an active member of Stephen Ministries and FUMC Lunch Bunch.

Survivors include daughters; Deborah Powell, Weslaco, TX., Cynthia Tarczynski, Jacksonville, FL; and son, Artie R. Coop, Topeka; four grandchildren and six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, a sister and two brothers.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 4, 2006 at First United Methodist Church. Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery. Alice will lie in state at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel after 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.

Memorial contributions may be made to Lunch Bunch at First United Methodist Church, 600 SW Topeka, Topeka, Kansas 66603-3200.
