Hazel Irene May, 93, Topeka, died Friday, Aug. 27, 2004 at Aldersgate.
She was born May 9, 1911 in McPherson, the daughter of Oscar L. and Anna Peterson Engstrom. She was raised on a farm in the New Gotland area north of McPherson. She graduated from McPherson, and attended Kansas City University and Vanderbilt University. She received her RN from Trinity Lutheran Hospital, Kansas City, MO.
She served in the US Navy during WW2 stationed at Great Lakes Naval Hospital. Following her discharge, she moved back to Kansas City, where she worked at several hospitals, and did private duty nursing.
Mrs. May came to Topeka in 1948. She was employed as a nurse at Stormont-Vail Hospital and Hallmark Card Company. She was an active member of West Side Baptist Church, serving as a Deaconess, a member of the board of Christian Education and taught Sunday School for many years.
She married Richard O. May on Aug. 20, 1949 in Salina. He survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Janice Grogan, West Des Moines, IA, Judith Juba, Baltimore, MD, two sons, Richard O. May, Jr, Topeka, and Steven A. May, Topeka, brother, Carl Engstrom, Salina, nine grandchildren, and thirteen great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Monday at West Side Baptist Church. Private inurnment will be in Penwell Gabel's Memorial Park Cemetery.
