Harry William Yommer, 78, Topeka, died Thursday, July 7, 2005 at Midland Hospice House.
Harry was born May 19, 1927 in Jennings, Maryland. He was the son of the late Bruce and Jessie Warnick Yommer.
Harry graduated from Grantsville, Maryland High School in 1944. He joined the Merchant Marine, with which he served 1944-45. Harry then served in the 25th Infantry Division in the Army from 1945-48. Subsequently, he served as a Master Sergeant in the Air Force, as a communications specialist, retiring after 20 years of service. Harry then worked at the USPS Supply Center, in Topeka, retiring December 31, 1989.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Harry was an active volunteer in his church and community, donating over 10 gallons of blood to the American Red Cross during the years he lived in Topeka.
Harry married Dorothy Hardy in Houston, Texas in 1954. They were divorced. He married Ferne Gillum Phillips on July 6, 1967, in Miami, Oklahoma. She died June 17, 1984. He married Joan Miller Schaaf on January 6, 1988, in Dallas, Texas. She survives.
Survivors include two brothers, Joseph Yommer, Olney, Maryland; and Willard Yommer, Lewisville, Ohio; one sister, Norma Ruth Yommer Quail, Rome, New York; six step-children, Patricia Phillips Kinsey, Lewiston, Montana; Barbara Phillips Baldwin, Northridge, California; Teresa Schaaf Douglas, Topeka, Kansas; Art Schaaf, Jr., Prairie Village, Kansas; Aaron Schaaf, Blair, Oklahoma; and Lisa Schaaf Beaver, Topeka, Kansas; fourteen grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
Harry was preceded in death by seven brothers, Oney, Osborne, David, Harold, Homer, Jack, and Richard Yommer, and two sisters, Mary Helen Yommer Stephani and Wanda Yommer Gross.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Monday, July 11, 2005 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Mr. Yommer will lie in state at Penwell-Gabel Southeast Chapel after 2:00 PM on Saturday, and visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 PM on Saturday. Burial will be in Penwell-Gabel's Memorial Park Cemetery.
