Harry W. Lawrence, 85, Topeka, passed away Thursday, July 3, 2014 at Midland Hospice House.

Harry was born May 12, 1929 (Mother's Day) in Chicago, to Harry and Marie (Wojceiski) Lawrence. He graduated from high school in Chicago. He tried joining the military at age 15 and 16 and was rejected for age. Finally in 1946, he turned 17 and joined the Army. Harry spent the next 23 years in the Army. He served in Korea, Japan, Germany, Lebanon and Vietnam. He was also stationed in various posts in the U.S. He taught ROTC at Wayne University in Detroit, MI and also in Detroit High School. Harry retired from the Army in Germany as a Master Sergeant after 23 years of service. After retirement, he opened an Insurance and Travel agency in Mannheim, Germany. In 1977, he returned to the United States and not knowing where to settle, he chose Topeka as the center of the U.S. In July while working at Marling's, He met Wanda L. Case and fell in love immediately. They married in 1978. He also ran his backhoe and dump truck service for several years. He finally retired as general Manager of Kansas Industries for the Blind in 1995. Since then, he volunteered at Stormont-Vail and St. Francis Hospitals, working in the Bio-Medical Engineering Department and in the Joint Replacement Center.

Harry was a member of Lakeview Church of the Nazarene, a Charter member of the Kaw Valley Woodcarvers Association, and American Legion Post #1.

Survivors include his wife of 37 years; sons, Craig (Ann) Case, Tecumseh, Scott (Caroline) Case, Allen, TX; 4 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and his faithful canine companion, Schatzie. He was preceded in death by a brother and sister.

Cremation has taken place, and a Celebration of Life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 6, 2014 at Lakeview Church of the Nazarene. Private family inurnment will be in the Holton Cemetery at a later date. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.

Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel is assisting with arrangements.
