Harry Raymond Whitney

Harry Raymond "Ray" Whitney age 89, of Topeka, passed away Saturday, June 3, 2006.

Ray was born Sept. 22, 1916, in Wakarusa, KS, the son of Charles W. Whitney and Clara B. Crow Whitney.

He attended elementary school in Cummings, KS and graduated in 1933 from Nortonville high school in Nortonville, KS. From 1933- 1935 Ray attended Strickler's Business College. During the years of 1938-39 he supplemented his education at the University of Kansas Extension Dept. Later he received further education at USC Institute of Business economics and Northwestern Univ. Business School.

He worked with Poehler Mercantile Company from 1935-37. In 1937 he began working with the Santa Fe Railway Co. in Emporia, KS. He continued to work for Santa Fe until Dec. 1979. During his 42 yrs. of service with Santa Fe he was stationed in Emporia, Topeka, Denver, St. Joseph, Tulsa and retiring in Topeka.

A World War II veteran, Ray served in the Army Air Force from 6/3/42 to 1/11/46. His overseas service was with the Headquarters of the 14th Air Force in China.

Ray married Betty Lou Adair on 1/18/41. He is survived by his wife, Betty, and daughters, Janet R. Archer, Glendale, AZ, and Catherine W. Cadwalader, Overland Park, KS, four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Ray was preceded in death by brothers, Roland and Cloyde, and sister, Virginia Williams.

He was a member of Grace Cathedral, Topeka, KS, Wakarusa Masonic Lodge, the Topeka Scottish Rite Consistory, Arab Shrine, and past president of the Arab Shrine Golfers Unit. He was also a member of the American Legion, Topeka.

A Memorial service will be held at Grace Episcopal Cathedral on Wed., June 7, 2006, at 11:00 a.m. A private burial will take place at a later time. Arrangements are with Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel.
