Harry E. Cooper, Jr., 87, of Topeka, passed away peacefully at home, Sunday, January 2, 2011.
Harry was born November 2, 1923, in Topeka, the son of Harry E. Cooper, Sr. and Sarah L. (Benner) Cooper. He graduated from Topeka High School and attended Michigan State University, while serving in the Navy and Army Air Corps. Harry served in the Army Air Corps. during WWII. He retired from Santa Fe Railroad in 1985; where he worked in the claims department as the Director of Salvage. Harry was an usher for Washburn University Sports Department, Topeka Fairgrounds, and Topeka Community concerts.
He married Lois Doreen Carlson March 10, 1945, in Bakersfield, California. She preceded him in death July 2, 1997. Harry married Betty Jean Rake August 20, 1998, in Las Vegas, Nevada. She survives.
Harry is survived by his wife, Betty Cooper, Topeka; son, Craig A. Cooper (Cindy), Tecumseh; daughter, Sherri L. Gerety (Bob), Peabody; and step-daughter, Gail Beavers (Ron), Topeka; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Lois, step-daughter, Vicky Southall, and grandson, Cory Cooper.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 6, 2011, at Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Ave., Topeka. Burial will follow at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery. Mr. Cooper will lie in state after 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, at the funeral home; where family will greet friends from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Wednesday.
