Harold L. Pellegrino, 93, Topeka, died peacefully with his family by his side on Sunday January 18, 2004.
Mr. Pellegrino was born in Pittsburg, Kansas September 12, 1910 the son of John Pellegrino of Coblentz, Germany and Mary Kuplen Pellegrino, Vienna, Austria.
He served with the 635th Tank Destroyer Battalion during WWII landing on Omaha Beach and was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge. He received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star retiring as a Major.
Mr. Pellegrino graduated from Washburn University with a BBA. He was a safety engineer with the State of Kansas having a special interest in school pupil transportation. Mr. Pellegrino retired in 1974.
He was a member of Siloam Lodge, Scottish Rite, Arab Shrine serving as a director in the Greeter's Unit, American Legion, National Sojourner's, West Topeka Rotary Club where he was a Paul Harris Fellow, President of the 635th Tank Destroyer Reunion from 1946-1999, the advisory committee of the Museum of the Kansas National Guard and the Shawnee Country Club. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church where he had served as an Elder. Mr. Pellegrino was active in Boy Scouts where he was elected to Order of the Arrow and enjoyed helping coach on his son's baseball teams.
He married Virginia Cooper on October 11, 1945 in Ft. Scott, Kansas. She survives. Mr. Pellegrino was preceded in death by his three brothers and a sister. Other survivors include one son, Kent Pellegrino, Topeka, one niece, one nephew and his cousin Adeline Pellegrino and family Esch Sur Alzette, Luxembourg, Europe.
Funeral services will be held 9:00 a.m., Thursday, January 22, 2004 at the Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel. Graveside services will follow at 2:00 pm Thursday at Evergreen Cemetery, Ft. Scott, KS. Mr. Pellegrino will lie in state after 12:00 noon Wednesday at the funeral home where the family will greet friends from 5:00pm until 6:30pm, Wednesday.
