H. Max Bennett, 81, of Topeka, died on December 14, 2014 at his home.
Max was born on April 21, 1933 in Ottawa, the son of Harold Marcus and Beth (Reynolds) Bennett. He graduated from Eskridge High School and lived all of his working life in Topeka.
Max was married to Dorthy Harding on December 22, 1979 in Mayetta, KS.
Max worked for Volume Shoe Corp, now Payless Shoesource, as Vice President with 32 years of service; he retired in 1988. He worked part-time with Payless World Wide for 7 years post-retirement.
He was a member of First Southern Baptist Church, where he volunteered as Administrator and Treasurer as well as several other volunteer positions with the church.
Max was active within the community as volunteer. He served on the Stormont-Vail Foundation board of trustees, the YMCA Foundation board, the YMCA metro board as well as several other YMCA committees. He was active with the Brewster Place Foundation board of trustees, past resident council, and various other volunteer positions at Brewster Place. He served as president of the Sail-Away Homes Association at Lake Pomona for 7 years and on the board of Brookfield West Homes Association for several years.
Max was a member and past Grand Master of Siloam Lodge #225 and served as District Deputy Grand Master and Area Deputy Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Kansas AF & AM. He was a member of the Arab Shrine of Topeka.
Max is survived by his wife, Dorthy Bennett of Topeka; son, Douglas Bennett and daughters, Diane (Michael) Llamas, and Janeen (Danny) Walters, all of Topeka. He is also survived by step-sons, Neil (Mary Lou) Harding and Michael (Betty ), both of Mayetta; step-daughters, Rowena (James) McCauely of Mayetta and Cricket (Tim) Stone-LeJeune of Plano, TX; 9 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and by his sister, Lorene Patton.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 17 at the Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel, 1321 SW 10th Ave., Topeka.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 18 at First Southern Baptist Church, 1912 SW Gage Blvd, Topeka. Burial will follow at Penwell-Gabel Cemetery in Topeka.
